You know in an instant when you are looking at a true Burlington. And that’s something comparatively few manufacturers can stake claim to - complete at-a-glance recognition.
For almost a century, the company behind Burlington has produced only the finest textiles and related items for discerning buyers. From fabrics for home furnishings and carpets to clothing, Burlington Industries is pedigree personified.
Even today, the Burlington name is synonymous with quality and distinction. The company’s clothing and textiles are now produced at over 40 factories around the world, where the brand’s founding values of quality and consistency are maintained.
All of which is evident in every stitch that goes into a pair of Burlington socks, which have only improved in quality and appeal over the years. And if you needed any further proof of the pure quality of these socks, just look to the Falke umbrella they’re sold under for European markets.
A Long and Illustrious History
Burlington has a legacy that extends all the way back to the 1920s. It was in 1923 that Burlington Industries was officially founded by J. Spencer Love - an American fabric maker operating out of Greensboro, North Carolina.
After returning home at the end of the First World War, Spencer Love began working full-time at a spinning mill owned by his uncle. He spent four years honing his craft, before making the decision to set up his own independent business.
Spencer Love was so ambitious and successful that he eventually purchased his uncle’s mill. Soon after, he secured funding from the Chamber of Commerce in Burlington, North Carolina, to construct a new manufacturing plant.
And so, the Burlington name officially came to be.
Spencer Love’s original mill was subsequently shut down and the entire operation transferred to Burlington. His new company - Burlington Mills - was officially founded in November 1923, with more than 200 eager employees.
And 'eager' really doesn’t quite cover it. Those involved at the factory began producing textiles long before the building was even fully constructed!
A Lasting Legacy
“Burlington fabrics have been trusted to perform for over 90 years. Today, we continue our commitment to supply advanced performance fabrics to the apparel, military, activewear, barrier and contract markets around the world. Our mission is simple. Our values are set. We develop the fabric of tomorrow driven by innovation, social responsibility and continuous improvement.” - Burlington
Spencer Love’s Burlington brand was hugely successful. Still, it wasn’t until much later in the 1970s that the company’s socks became truly iconic. This was when Burlington introduced its legendary Scottish Argyle pattern, which even today is one of the brand’s instantly recognisable trademarks.
In 2001, Burlington Industries was taken over in its entirety by the International Textile Group. However, the company is still operated under the names Burlington Worldwide Apparel and Burlington House Interior Fabrics. All helping to perpetuate the legacy of one of the world’s best-loved textile brands, and most memorable sock designers.
A Twist on Tartan
Just as each Scottish Clan traditionally has its own unique tartan, so too do the various product collections from Burlington. The difference is that with Burlington socks, the pattern is twisted 45 degrees.
This simple yet effective twist on tradition has been imitated by thousands of manufacturers over the years, but never bettered. Almost 100 years after the company’s establishment, the Burlington argyle check logo and famous metal button on each pair of socks remain instantly recognisable marks of quality, sophistication, and distinction.
Today’s contemporary collection of Burlington socks for men and women includes a wide variety of Argyle and simpler designs. You’ll find everything from temperature-regulating knee-high socks to luxurious merino wool varieties.
Whether you’re sock-hunting for sporting activities, high-profile business meetings, or casual encounters, Burlington socks have the perfect fit for you.
Committed to Continuous Improvement
“There is no better way to ensure the prosperity of future generations than by protecting our precious resources – employees, environment, and community. Throwing aside “that’s the way we’ve always done it” – we look to new ways, new solutions and an open willingness to explore the unknown with the goal of finding a better way to develop and make fabrics. Moving forward; never standing still.” - Burlington
Throughout its history, Burlington has demonstrated impressive commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Today, the company is more heavily involved in the research and development of emerging technologies than ever before.
This brand takes the responsibility of tomorrow seriously, and never stops looking for innovative, sustainable ways to produce its products. Which means, by supporting Burlington, you’re also doing your bit for the planet.
